12 Days of Dirty Vegetables

Considering the upcoming 12 days of Christmas we are sharing the 12 days of dirty vegetables, aka the 12 fruits/vegetables that are best to buy organic, when possible.

Organic or not organic?  Local or imported?  Food labeling questions abound while shopping at the grocery store or local market.  

If you don’t want to buy organic produce all the time, here’s a list of the 12 most contaminated fruits/vegetables to consider buying organic whenever possible:

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Grapes (Imported)
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes

And just because it isn’t organic, doesn’t mean it’s not nutritious.  Some local farmers may not want to pay for the “organic” certification label, even though their farming practices don’t use chemicals.  Consider buying a local tomato versus an organic imported tomato.  It will be more flavorful, fresh, & perfectly ripe!
